Two Weeks Until Travel Season. I Asked AI to Get My Teen Ready.

My teenager's travel team starts in two weeks.

She hasn't played in a while. Not forever, but long enough that the first practice was going to hurt. And if you're anything like me, you know the feeling: you want them ready, you are not a trainer, and a private coach for two weeks of conditioning is a lot.

So I asked AI.

I gave it the real details. Her age, her position, how competitive the league is, how long she's been off, and how much time we actually have. That last part matters. I didn't ask for a dream plan. I asked for a plan for this kid, starting now.

It came back with a day-by-day program. Conditioning, footwork, strength, rest days, and a slow build so she peaks right when the season starts instead of burning out by day four. It even explained why each day looked the way it did, which made it a lot easier to sell to a fifteen-year-old.

That's the part that got me. A coach-level plan, built in about the time it takes to sit in the pickup line.

Steal this prompt

Act as a youth sports performance coach. My child is [age], plays [sport] at the [position] position, and is about to start [team or league level, e.g. a competitive travel team]. They have been off for [how long]. We have [number] days until the season starts and about [minutes] a day to train, with access to [what you have: a driveway, a park, a gym, nothing]. Build a day-by-day training plan that safely rebuilds conditioning and sharpens position-specific skills, includes rest and recovery days, and ramps up gradually so they are ready on day one. Explain the purpose of each day in one line so a teenager will actually buy in. Ask me any questions you need before you start.

Who else can use this

The sports mom. Swap in your kid's sport, age, and timeline. Works for tryouts, a new season, or getting back after a break.

The coach. Run it for your whole team before preseason, or once per position. Hand every player a plan on day one.

The mom who is also the coach. You know who you are. You're running the snack schedule and the practice plan. Let AI write the drills so you can run them.

Other ways to use the same prompt

  • Before tryouts. Change the goal to "peak for a tryout on [date]."
  • Off-season. Ask for a maintenance plan so they don't start from zero next year.
  • Coming back from a minor setback. Ask for an easy, gradual return plan, and run it past their doctor or trainer first.
  • A brand-new sport. Ask for a beginner foundation plan plus the basic rules and terms, so you can actually follow the game from the bleachers.

What worked, and the honest misses

What worked: It was specific to her position and it built in rest. I would not have thought to plan recovery days.

The miss: The first version assumed equipment we don't have. One follow-up ("we only have a driveway and a park") fixed it. Tell it what you actually have up front.

The benefit: Less guessing, less stress, and a kid who walks into practice one ready, not winded.

A quick note: AI is a starting point, not a coach, trainer, or doctor. Check any training plan with your child's coach, and talk to their doctor before starting a new program, especially after time off or an injury. Results vary, and no plan guarantees performance.
