A cozy date night at home planned with AI

One prompt, no babysitter, and the best night we've had on our own couch in months.

If you're anything like me, "date night" lately looks like two adults on a couch, scrolling separate phones, while a show neither of us picked autoplays in the background. Hot.

So last Friday I handed the whole thing to AI. My only rules: kids asleep by 8, no sitter, one grocery run max, and it had to be good enough to make him put his phone down. Voluntarily.

The brief took two minutes. I told it what was in my fridge, that we had a bottle of red we'd been "saving," and that I wanted it to feel like we went out without leaving the house. I also told it the truth: I had about 45 minutes of energy left in me. It planned around that like a seasoned event planner who's also a little tired.

The menu made me look like I tried. Burrata with jammy tomatoes and good olive oil. Garlic butter steak bites. Brownies from a box, but warmed in ramekins with flaky salt so they read as "molten chocolate cake." Nobody at this table asked questions.

Steal this prompt

Plan a cozy date night at home for me and my husband. Kids go to bed at [time]. I have [ingredients] and [time] to prep. Give me a 3-course menu that feels like a restaurant, a timeline that starts after bedtime, a playlist vibe, a way to set the room, and one activity that gets us talking, not watching. Keep it easy and a little flirty.

The room got a glow-up in ten minutes. It told me to kill the overhead lights, move dinner to the coffee table, throw a blanket on the floor, and light every candle I own. Our living room, the same one covered in LEGO at 5pm, looked like a wine bar by 8:15.

The playlist did the heavy lifting. I asked for "Italian dinner party energy, but make it sexy." It delivered old-school jazz that slid into slow R&B right around dessert. Coincidence? I think not.

Then the questions. This was the part I didn't expect. I asked for conversation cards that started sweet and got progressively bolder. Round one was "What did you notice about me the night we met?" Round three was... not for this blog. Let's just say the phones stayed in the kitchen.

What it got wrong. Its first draft included a soufflé. Babe, I said 45 minutes. It also built a timeline that assumed children fall asleep the second the door closes. Adorable. One quick "be realistic, I'm a mom" and it fixed both.

The verdict. Twenty minutes of planning. Zero dollars on a sitter. A night that felt like we got dressed up and went somewhere, except I was in my softest sweater and we were home when the little one called for water. The fund went up on every front: more time, more money, and a husband who's asking when we're doing it again.
