I Used AI as My Personal Makeup Artist. It Built My Entire Sephora List.

One question about foundation turned into a full makeup routine, a budget, and a buy-this-first order. Here's the prompt I used.

Close-up of a woman sweeping blush onto her cheek with a soft brush in warm morning light.

If you're anything like me, you've stared at forty foundation shades that all look the same under store lighting, then grabbed the prettiest bottle and hoped.

This time I asked AI first: what's the best foundation for my skin?

One conversation later I had a personalized Sephora list, product comparisons, costs, and a clear order for what to buy first. No hours of scrolling reviews.

The whole move in five lines

  1. Tell it about your skin. Type, age range, what bugs you.
  2. Tell it the look you want. Natural, dewy, matte, full glam.
  3. Name your store. Sephora, Ulta, Target, wherever you shop.
  4. Let it interview you. That's where the personalization happens.
  5. Ask for a buy-first list. Five products, not fifteen.

No makeup knowledge needed. ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini all work.

Steal this prompt

Act as a professional makeup artist with 20 years of experience creating natural, polished looks for real women with busy lives.

Before you recommend anything, interview me. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer. Find out my age range, skin type, biggest skin concerns, the look I want, when I usually wear makeup, where I like to shop, and my budget.

Then build me a complete routine: primer, foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, mascara, eyeshadow, brows, and lips.

For each product:
- Explain why it fits my skin and the look I want
- Give an approximate price
- Choose strong reviews and the right formula over the most expensive option

Rank everything by how much difference it will make to how I look.

Then tell me the five products to buy first if I'm not buying everything at once.

Finally, give me a short in-store list: which shades to swatch and what to ask the associate.

If I upload a photo, use it to suggest colors that flatter me, and tell me plainly what a photo can't tell you.

Pro move: use voice mode and talk about your face for two minutes. "Flaky by 2pm, I hate cakey, I want to look awake at pickup." That beats any checklist.

What came back

  • A routine ranked by impact. What actually matters vs. nice to have.
  • Comparisons and costs. Why one foundation over another, and roughly what I'd spend.
  • Application tips. The how, not just the what.
  • The buy-first five. The real gift. No buying everything at once.

Where it falls short

  • It can't see your skin. A photo can't nail your shade or undertone. Phone cameras lie.
  • It can be out of date. Shades get discontinued and prices move. Check the site before you buy.
  • Reviews aren't a guarantee. Five stars from strangers isn't your face.

AI got me to the right shelf. My face gets the final vote.

Before you shop

  • Screenshot your buy-first list.
  • Swatch on your jawline, near a window. Store lighting is not your friend.
  • Ask for a sample. Wear it a full day before committing.
  • Go back to the same chat. Tell it what worked. It adjusts.

Start with something you already love. For me, it was makeup.

Every face and budget is different, so this isn't a promise you'll save time or money. It's what worked for me.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT recommend makeup for my skin type?

Yes. Describe your skin type, concerns, and the look you want, and it will build a routine with reasons for each pick. Verify prices and availability before buying.

Can AI match my foundation shade from a photo?

Not reliably. Lighting, cameras, and filters skew color. Use AI to narrow your shortlist, then swatch in person.

Is it safe to upload a selfie to AI?

Check your app's privacy settings first. If you'd rather not share a photo, describe your skin in words. It still works. More in our guide to AI safety for moms.

Which AI is best for makeup recommendations?

ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all handle this well. Pick one that can search the web, so prices and products are current.
